Yuk Sung – Easy Pork Mince Recipe. On the table in under 30 minutes, this delicious and healthy pork Yuk Sung family friendly recipe is so easy to make. These Chinese Lettuce Wraps are the perfect mid week supper.
Happy New Year! After a Christmas of wonderful excess and now the children have returned to school (sob) I’m focussing on getting back into some sort of routine.
The first thing on my list is to start eating healthy again. I’m craving vegetables, and that says it all really doesn’t it?!
This Pork Mince Yuk Sung recipe is one of my favourite go to, lighter options. I first discovered it when I was following the Slimming World plan and it’s been a favourite ever since.
I’m not sure how authentic this Yuk Sung recipe, but it’s totally delicious. Flavourful and really quick, we all love it, hope you do too.
How do you make Yuk Sung?
Yuk Sung is a super simple midweek dish, that can be made in under 30 minutes. There is a fair bit of chopping to do but I have a little cheat to help me with this.. I use an electric chopper to get the carrots really fine does make a difference to the texture of the Yuk Sung. I would recommend this Mini Food Chopper, its great for hidden vegetable dishes too like my Bolognese Recipe.
To make Yuk Sung, firstly chop your onions, carrots and ginger and crush your garlic. Set this to one side whilst you gently fry your pork until browned. Now remove the pork from the pan and fry the onion, garlic and ginger until softened. Add in your carrots and mushrooms and fry further. Finally put the pork back into the pan, adding in the Chinese Five Spice, Dark and Light Soy Sauce and Oyster Sauce and cook for 10-15 minutes.
Once the mixture is browned and the liquid has been absorbed by the meat you are ready to serve your Yuk Sung. I use little gem lettuce leaves as carb free wraps, and top with spring onions and chillies.
How many calories are in Yuk Sung?
There are around 200 calories in each Yuk Sung wrap making this a healthy choice. Yuk Sung is a low carb dish, so is great if you are following a reduced carb diet. By choosing 5% fat pork or chicken you can also further reduce the fat content.
If you are following Slimming World you need to count up your Syns. To reduce Syns; dry fry the ingredients (or use spray oil like Fry Light), use lean turkey mince, and also add extra “free” vegetables to boost your quantities. You’ll need to count the Syns in the Oyster Sauce, but I promise – they are worth it!
If you starting the new year with all good intentions then have a look at my other healthy recipes including Slimming World friendly crustless quiche and Chicken Kebabs.
Is there a vegetarian version of Yuk Sung?
Yuk Sung can easily be made vegetarian and even vegan. Simply substitute the pork for Quorn mince or vermicelli noodles and use Vegetarian Oyster Sauce, for a simple meat free Monday or Veganuary dish.
Many Soy sauces are also gluten free so check yours and if so, this combined with the vegetarian Oyster Sauce makes this a great gluten free choice too.
What I used to make this Pork Mince Yuk Sung recipe:
- My favourite ever Wok (so heavy and cooks SO well – it is an investment purchase, but mine is as good as it was the day I bought it 10 years ago and I use it ALL the time.)
- Must have Oyster sauce
- Super useful Mini Chopper
Tips for making Yuk Sung:
- I have used both Light and Dark Soy Sauces in this Yuk Sung recipe. You can just use one type but it is really worth investing in two good quality soy sauces as they both add something different. Dark Soy Sauce gives a caramel colour and a sweeter taste whilst Light Soy Sauce enhances the flavour of your dishes. Light Soy sauce alone can also be salty so together they give a beautiful colour and perfect seasoning.
- Yuk Sung is traditionally served in iceberg lettuce. However, I found the size of a Little Gem lettuce to be perfect, especially for smaller hands.
- Oyster sauce is a secret Chinese ingredient, it adds amazing flavour to all Chinese style dishes. I always have a bottle in the fridge. You can also buy Vegetarian and Vegan versions.
- This Yuk Sung recipe uses red chillies, which add colour and flavour. I put these in a bowl on the table, so can be left out entirely for young children.
Hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we do. I’d love to know how you got on and what you thought of it if you make this Yuk Sung recipe. Please rate the recipe and leave me a comment below if you do.
