Today we braved the theatre with our pair of pre-schoolers to see We’re Going on a Bear Hunt at Birmingham Town Hall.
We started they day with a train journey to town, which is guaranteed to cause a LOT of excitement. They whiled away the journey spotting eagles (err.. I think they were pigeons but who am I to correct them?!). We arrived and found our seats in the stunning Town Hall auditorium.
It’s a beautiful building, perfect for kids performances. Modern seating, with heaps of space to get in and out mid performance (in case of that “I NEED A WEEEEEE” 3 minutes in).
The show is an adaption of the much loved children’s book about a family searching for a bear. (There were a lot of questions about this on the train “will there be an actual real bear in the theatre?” cue some panic.)
The performance absolutely gripped our two. They watched in total fascination for an hour as the Dad and two children, plus baby and their dog, searched through rivers, mud and forest for the bear. The show is perfectly pitched at pre-school age. Singing, audience participation and interaction, so much to look at.
What I love most about these performances at the Town Hall are the fact that they are so family friendly. Welcoming to kids, booster seats available and a bit of noise and chaos is the norm. No frowning or worrying about kids being kids. Such a fantastic introduction to live performances.
